Aquamarine
buying guide

A working guide to fine aquamarine: the color that sets the price, why clarity is the baseline, the heat question, and what aquamarine actually costs.

The Color Of Calm Water 12 Minute Read

Aquamarine is beryl colored blue by iron, the same crystal family as emerald and morganite. Where emerald hides a garden of inclusions, aquamarine shows you everything.

That transparency is the whole character of the gemstone. Aquamarine grows large and clean, takes a bright crisp polish, and gives more size for the money than almost any other fine blue. This guide covers the color that drives price, why a clean stone is the baseline rather than the prize, how heat works here, and where the best blue comes from.

If you remember one thing from this piece: in aquamarine you pay for depth of blue, not for clarity. Clarity is expected. Color is the rare part.

Santa Maria
The Blue Standard

How to read the colorpure blue beats blue green

Color is the whole price of aquamarine. The species runs from pale sky to a deep saturated blue, and value climbs with the depth and purity of that blue. A stone that reads slightly green is lovely and gentle on the budget. A pure vivid blue is the rare one.

The trade name for the finest blue is Santa Maria, after a Brazilian mine that produced an unusually deep color. Today the name follows the saturation rather than the source, and the most saturated African material is sold as Santa Maria as well. It is a grade, not a postcode.

Aquamarine is pleochroic, showing blue down one axis and near colorless down another, so a good cutter orients the stone to face up its bluest. This is why two aquamarines of the same weight can look a tier apart: one was cut for color, the other for size.

Saturation holds up at scale. Where many gems pale out as they grow, fine aquamarine keeps its blue into large sizes, which is part of why a serious statement stone is within reach here in a way it never is in sapphire.

Crystal Clear
Clarity Expected

Clean is the baselinejudged on color, not clarity

Here is the part that surprises people: aquamarine is judged on color, not clarity, because clean is the baseline. The species grows in large transparent crystals, and a fine aquamarine is expected to be eye clean. Visible inclusions are the exception, not a feature to forgive.

That transparency is the gemstone’s signature. Aquamarine takes a crisp glassy polish and reads bright and watery in any light, with none of the garden of inclusions that defines its cousin emerald. What you are buying is openness.

So when you weigh two stones, hold color constant and let clarity be assumed. If a seller asks a premium for clarity in aquamarine, ask what the color is doing, because that is where the money actually lives.

The Open Sea
The Honest Treatment

Heat, and what it settlesthe standard treatment and the rare untreated blue

Almost all aquamarine on the market is gently heated. Many crystals come out of the ground with a faint green or yellow cast, and low heat settles them into the pure blue the gem is loved for. The change is stable and permanent, and the trade treats it as standard.

Untreated aquamarine with a naturally fine blue exists and is prized by purists, and we flag it when we have it. For most buyers the heated blue is the honest, beautiful default, priced with that disclosure built in.

One caution worth knowing. A rare deep blue called maxixe is produced by irradiation and fades back toward colorless in daylight over time. It is uncommon in the trade, but it is the reason a too good to be true deep blue deserves a question. Everything we sell is color stable.

A deep, clean blue from any source outranks a pale one with a famous name.

Why color, not origin, sets the price in aquamarine

Minas Gerais
Brazil To Mozambique

Where aquamarine comes fromBrazil, Mozambique, and the African Santa Maria

Brazil set the standard. The mines of Minas Gerais and Espirito Santo have produced aquamarine for over a century, from gentle sky blues to the original Santa Maria saturation.

Africa carries the modern supply. Mozambique and Nigeria produce strong blues, including the saturated material that earns the Santa Maria name today, with Madagascar and Pakistan rounding out the field.

Origin matters less in aquamarine than in ruby or emerald. The eye buys the blue, and a deep clean blue from any of these sources outranks a pale one with a famous postcode.

Treatment
Durable Blue

Living with aquamarinehard, bright, and made for every day

Aquamarine is built for daily life. At 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale it shares the hardness of its cousin emerald without the brittleness, because it carries none of emerald’s fracture filling and few inclusions to begin with.

That makes it one of the few large, affordable colored gemstones genuinely suited to an everyday ring. No oil to refresh, no coating to protect, no special handling. Warm water, mild soap, a soft brush.

It is the birthstone of March and a long standing token for sailors and travelers, the color of calm water carried for safe passage. It sits as easily in white metal as in yellow.

To compare it against its beryl siblings, see emerald and morganite, or read our grading guide for how color and cut translate into value across every gemstone we carry.
