At 7.99 carats, this tourmaline from Nigeria carries its orange color through an oval cut, measuring 14.4 x 11.1 x 8.9 mm.

Tourmaline takes a wider range of color than almost any other gem species, because its crystal will accept so many different coloring elements. Nigeria's gem fields rose to prominence in the 1990s and remain a significant modern source. It is wholly untreated, its color finished by geology rather than by any furnace or enhancement.
