Topaz is a hard, brilliant gem species; its blues are the best known, but it runs from colorless through the coveted imperial oranges. Brazil has been one of the most prolific colored-gemstone sources in the world for a century, and still turns up new material on a regular basis. Its color was brought up by irradiation, a standard and fully disclosed treatment for this material.
