At 0.85 carats, this spinel from Tanzania carries its pink color through an oval cut, measuring 6.1 x 5.2 x 3.9 mm.

Spinel is the gemstone long mistaken for ruby in old crown jewels; in its own right it grows as a hard, brilliant, untreated red, pink, or blue. Tanzania holds some of the most interesting modern gem deposits, including several found nowhere else. It is wholly untreated, its color finished by geology rather than by any furnace or enhancement.
