At 7.2 carats, this iolite from Brazil carries its blue color through a pear cut, measuring 15.9 x 10.8 x 8.0 mm.

Iolite shifts from violet-blue to near-colorless as you turn it, a pleochroism so strong that Viking navigators are said to have used it to find the sun. Brazil has been one of the most prolific colored-gemstone sources in the world for a century, and still turns up new material on a regular basis. It is wholly untreated, its color finished by geology rather than by any furnace or enhancement.
